How Many LEDs Does It Take to Change City’s Streetlights?
MISSISSAUGA — Enersource is swapping the old bulbs in 49,000 Mississauga street lights for new, light-emitting diodes.
The City of Mississauga said the new LED will reduce energy consumption by 55 % and maintenance costs by 50 % while providing better visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
As well, the lights should only have to be replaced every 20 years and will greatly reduce light pollution in the sky.
“I’m proud to say Mississauga is a leader among Canadian cities implementing this new natural white source that LED provides,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “This conversion project will provide more energy efficient street lights and reduce hydro and maintenance costs.”

The switch-over is now underway, to be completed by December 2014.
