Smart Lighting Control
March 2017
Context
In Quebec, Canada, most of the municipalities are managed by small administrations. Indeed, only 10 of the 1000 cities of the province have more than 100 000 inhabitants. Therefore, most of the mayors work with restraint team and budget.
Needs
Because of these constraints, small cities cannot afford same quality systems as megalopolis. This leads to inequalities with bigger cities which have more financial advantages because the less expensive systems at start often end up becoming more expensive, while the more advanced systems often make it possible to save costs in the medium-long term.
Thus, small towns needed an affordable, sustainable and cost-saving system.
Federating Municipalities with Technology
The “Fédération Québécoise des Municipalités (FQM)” took over that issue by offering Quebec cities the opportunity to convert their ageing public lighting network with LED lights equipped with Dimonoff’s wireless smart controls. The goal of that was to implement a public lighting network that is efficient, safe and respectful for the environment. From a logistic point of view, each project is managed by a unique project manager who takes care of all the phases and who deals with all the necessary resources in order to liberate cities from that process.
For a sound financial management, batch purchases made by the FQM enable the municipalities to reduce the costs for each product. Cities of every size now have access to the same systems as the big metropolises and can reduce their public lighting costs.
The Main Benefits of the Project
- Municipalities now have a real knowledge regarding the status of their lights
- Mayors have a better negotiation power with public utility
- Cities realize substantial savings on energy and maintenance
- Cities have a better management of maintenance team and complaints
- Cities can easily meet their goal of reducing their greenhouse gas per capita
- Cities can meet the Dark Sky standard which was set in place to reduce light pollution
