Smart Lighting Control
October 2012
Context
For the year 2011, the HPS streetlights had operating costs of $6.1 million for electricity and $2.3 million for maintenance resulting in a total of $8.4 million. If the HPS lights remained, the City of Mississauga, ON, Canada estimated its annual operating costs would reach $10.8 million by 2015.
Potential
This business case demonstrates how the potential savings of a networked LED streetlight system would provide annual savings over $3 million and a payback period under six years.
The first smart lighting project in Canada
After a year-long pilot, Mississauga, Ontario’s third largest city with a population exceeding 700,000, implemented one of Canada’s first full-scale LED & connected street lighting conversions to become the Canadian leader in energy efficiency. The adaptive controls system is comprised of multiple network areas that each consist of approximately 300 nodes that communicate between each other using a mesh network, and a central gateway that communicates between the mesh network and entire system server.
The nodes, gateway and network are integrated to provide wireless communication for the monitoring system Dimonoff | SCMS.
The Main Benefits of the Project
- Real-time monitoring of energy consumption
- Monitoring luminaire performance status
- Monitoring hours of operation of each luminaire
- Instant fault reporting
- Identifying day-burning luminaires
- Dimming functionality
